Ranjit Mardi

JNV Dakshin Dinajpur West Bengal
I'd like to become a Dakshana Scholar and hopefully attend Medical College

Q1. Introduce your Family to us ?
We are 3 members in the family—me, my father, and my mother. My father's name is Jatin Mardi. He is illiterate and does not even know how to write his own name. He is a farmer and has been engaged in farming for the last 15 years; sometimes he works as a daily-wage worker. He is the main source of income in the family. My mother's name is Fulmani Murmu. She is uneducated but somehow learned to write her own name. She is a housewife and sometimes works as a daily-wage labourer to earn some extra money for the family.

Q2. Why should you be awarded the Dakshana Scholarship?
Dakshana should award me the scholarship because its main motive is to support needy students from poor family backgrounds. I also belong to a lower-caste family with a poor economic condition. With the help of this scholarship, I can become a good doctor and serve society.

Q3. What is your ambition in life?
My ambition in life is to become a good doctor and serve society while strengthening my family. I also want to become an example for my community and for those who think that a boy from a lower-middle-class background and Santhal community cannot become a doctor.

Q4. How would you like to contribute to the society and the world when you become a successful?
When I become successful after completing my MBBS and MS, and when I start earning, I want to donate 10% of my salary to society. I also want to guide students from poor backgrounds who want to achieve good professions but don’t know the right path.

Q5. Describe an incident in your life that has motivated/inspired you to do better
As we belong to a lower caste (Santhal), people used to use it as slang because most of our community members are uneducated and get married at a lower age. Sometimes people told my father, “Why are you wasting your time educating your son? Send him for farming; he will earn some money,” and they laughed because they thought a boy from a poor background can’t get a job. That day I thought that I have to become successful and show them that we also can.

Q6. Tell us about your interests and hobbies?
My interest is to listen to music and spend time with nature. I also love to watch and play football with my friends.
